Reverse Email Lookup

Trace the email sender’s name and address history

Finding the IP address of an email could help people spot email scams and understand how to deal with a mysterious email. If you want to trace an email to its source but don’t know how, here are three real working methods. By using an advanced email lookup tool, you can even locate exactly who’s the email sender.

1. Analyze the email header

An email header shows how the message travels to your inbox. It contains valuable information about the sender and recipient, the servers, ISPs, and the service the message passed through, as well as other critical details related to the email deliverability. By reading an email header, you can retrieve its IP address.

For privacy protection, most email services like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo process emails with their servers and don’t expose the senders’ IP addresses. That said, the IP address in the email header may belong to the source mail server but not the sender’s actual IP address.

Step 1: Get IP address from the email header

On Gmail

1) Open the email in Gmail.

2) Click the three dots at the top right and click Show Original.

3) Scroll to the details and locate the second Received line. It will display the IP of the server that sent the email; just copy it.

On Microsoft Outlook

1) Open the email in Outlook.

2) Click the three dots at the top right of the message and click View > View message source.

3) Copy the IP address.

On Yahoo Mail

1) Open the email in Yahoo.

2) From the top pane, click the three dots and click View raw message.

3) Copy the IP address.

If you can’t retrieve the sender’s actual IP address from the header, you could, instead, send them a unique link to log their IP address.

Simply search for a free IP logger online and choose a reliable website. Create a tracking link by entering a URL, which could be anything you think the sender will be interested in clicking.

Send the generated link to the email address. Once its owner clicks the link, you’re able to see the user’s IP address and device details on the IP logger website.

Step 2: Look up the IP address

To learn more about the IP address, you’ll need to look it up online and check its general location (country, city, and zip code), ISP (Internet Service Provider), hostname, etc.

1) Go to WhatIsMyIPAddress.

2) On the search bar at the top, paste the IP address you copied from the email header and click Search.

3) You’ll see relevant information about the IP address and it will also tell you if the IP address is likely from a mail server.

An email IP address doesn’t give away much helpful information. It won’t reveal an email’s source nor does it determine its legitimacy. If you wonder who’s the person sending the email, you can perform a reverse email lookup to get the answer.

Don’t trust tools that claim to trace the real-time location of an email. Such tools typically don’t exist for privacy or security reasons.

2. Run a reverse email lookup

Here are two trustworthy and easy-to-use reverse email lookup tools. Just input an email, and they’ll search for relevant information for you.

Option 1 – BeenVerified

Founded in 2007, BeenVerified is a versatile online people search engine. Sifting through millions of public records from reliable sources, it can help you trace an email sender effectively and unlock a wealth of useful information about their background and identity.

1) Visit the BeenVerified email search page.

2) Enter the email in question and click Search.

3) Wait a few seconds as it scans the email data. Once done, you’ll get a detailed report that contains the email owner’s name, photos, phone numbers, emails, address history, associated social media profiles, and so on.

Option 2 – Spokeo

Spokeo is also a popular people search engine specializing in email lookups. By typing in a valid email, you can instantly look up who is the sender behind. Although this service doesn’t track IP addresses, it can show you the sender’s addresses, personal details, and even digital footprints.

1) Go to the Spokeo homepage.

2) Enter an unknown email address and click Search.

3) Open the report when it’s generated. You may see who owns the email address and linked social profiles. Then search again by the owner’s name, and you can get a comprehensive background report that discloses the person’s address.

3. Trace the email on social media

You can search for an unknown email in Google to see if there is any relevant information across the Internet. However, a common search engine may not access social media or private networks. If the returned results don’t help, you can go further by searching the email directly on social media

Search email on Facebook
You won’t be able to find an email’s IP address in this way but may find the social media of the email sender as well as their photos, whereabouts, and more details.

Get started on popular platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram. If you find a potential profile of the email owner, you could look for more clues about their location or address by checking their contact information section or browning their published posts
